IUBAT Economics Student Research Seminar

IUBAT Department of Economics organized a Student Research Seminar on 25 September 2022 Sundayin IUBAT Seminar Hall. Threestudents fromthe Department of Economics presented three papers in the Seminar. The three papers are (i) A Study on Educated Unemployment of Bangladesh (ii) Health and Safety Issues in RMG Sector in Bangladesh and (iii) Impact of Russia-Ukraine war on Bangladesh Economy. The seminar was presided over by Professor Dr. Abdur Rab, Vice Chancellor, and Professor Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum, Pro-Vice Chancellor, delivered special remarks. Dr. Golam Rasul, Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics, moderated the seminar. Professor Selina Nargis, Treasurer of IUBAT and other senior faculty, members, students andofficials were present in the seminar.

The first paper’s presenter, Mustafa Mia, stated that Bangladesh has the second highest educated unemployment in South Asia, trailing only Afghanistan. Because of uncertainties in future career, students are suffering from depression. About 80% of students have mild to severe depression and over two-third of students havelow and moderately perceived stress.  In second paper, Morium Akter stated that Garment workers experience distinctive health vulnerabilities in the workplace because of dangerous and unhealthy working conditions, and sub-standard physical environments. In the 69 hazardous incidents that occurred between 1990 and 2016, approximately 1,626 workers died and 4,829 were seriously injured.Furthermore, RMG workers are frequently affected by a variety of diseases because of unhygienic workplace conditions and dust generated by raw materials. In the third paper, Nababi Hasan Aditystated that Bangladesh economy affected very badly because of the Russia-Ukraine war and the subsequent sanctions, which increased the price ofessential commodities such as food and fuel on the international market.
