Harvesting Ceremony of 9th season Perennial Rice at IARS, Gazipur for the first time in Bangladesh

A harvesting Ceremony of Perennial Rice (PR) for the 9th season was held on May 18, 2024, at IUBAT Agriculture Research Station (IARS) at Rajendrapur, Gazipur. Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar, Executive Chairman of BARC joined the ceremony as the Chief Guest. The harvesting ceremony was also graced by the honorable Vice-Chancellor of IUBAT Prof. Dr. Abdur Rab, Prof. Selina Nargis, Treasurer and Director Administration of IUBAT, Dr. Naresh Chandra Deb Barma, Director of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF), Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Country Breeding Lead, IRRI Bangladesh, Prof. Rezaul Karim Siddique Anchor, Mati-O-Manush, BTV and Prof. Dr. M. Shohidullah Miah, Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS), IUBAT.

During the harvesting ceremony, Dr. Farjana Sultana, Principal Investigator of Perennial Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh and Associate Professor of CAS, IUBAT explained the performance of different lines of Perennial Rice and showed some extraordinarily promising lines after 4.5 years of continuous cultivation. The advanced PR lines were collected from Yunnan University, China under the Material Transfer Agreement with the College of Agricultural Sciences, IUBAT in 2019.

The honorable Executive Chairman of BARC, Country Breeding Lead, IRRI Bangladesh, and the other guests present in the meeting were very happy to see the outstanding performance of PR lines in Bangladesh at IUBAT Agriculture Research Field and they would like to see the performance of PR lines in the farmer’s field at different Agro-Ecological Zones of Bangladesh in near future.

In the harvesting ceremony PR research team, senior Faculty members, officers, and Internship students of the College of Agricultural Sciences of IUBAT were also present.
