Celebrate World sustainability Day at IUBAT

On November 4, the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) organized a seminar to celebrate World Sustainability Day at campus.

The seminar was enlightened by the Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh as the chief guest, Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Kamal Hossain from Bangladesh Scientific and Industrial Research Council and Prof. Selina Nargis, Treasurer and Director Administration of IUBAT as the guest of honor, Dr. M. Abul Kalam Mallick from Bangladesh Meteorological Department as the special guest, Md. Faizullah Talukder, Head of the Climate Change Program of the Christian Commission for Development Bangladesh as a guest speaker and Pro Vice Chancellor professor Dr M Mahmudur Rarman from IUBAT.

Professor Dr Ataur Rahman, the Chairman, Department of Environmental Science, Director of IUBAT Institute of SDG Studies (IISS); Chairperson, Centre for Global Environmental Culture (CGEC) and Executive Director and Coordinator of RCE Greater Dhaka, conveyed the welcome address to the seminar under the chairmanship of Professor Abdur Rob, Vice Chancellor of IUBAT.

After that, professor Selina Nargis, Treasurer and Director Administration of IUBAT and Pro Vice Chancellor professor Dr M Mahmudur Rarman of IUBAT, shared the values of IUBAT towards achieving sustainability by environmental education, sustainability practices and changing human behavior.

In the seminar, all the speakers drew attention to a deep understanding of the complexity of sustainability, challenges, and obstacles to achieve the SDGs. According to the chief guest Dr Susan vize, social and economic systems should be in consideration along with the environmental factors to achieve future sustainability. Dr. Kamal Hossain emphasized on the role of research and innovation in addressing environmental challenges. Dr. M. Abul Kalam Mallick as meteorologist focused on the changing pattern of weather and climate and requested every department to play smart for overcoming all the challenges. Md. Faizullah Talukder addressed the importance of utilization of resources, climate change and its impact on vulnerable communities to achieve sustainability.

Distinguished faculty members from the department of Environmental Science presented their research outcomes from different perspectives of sustainability. The research outcomes include the topic of delta plain management, biodegradable waste management, good teaching and learning system at IUBAT and the Environmental Science and Sustainability course outline, teaching materials, students and community involvement in practicing sustainability.

In the President’s speech, Vice-Chancellor Abdur Rab reminded that, from the beginning of IUBAT, the founder of Professor Dr M Alimullah Miyan considered the sustainability and established IUBAT as the green campus and ending with the commitment to continue the sustainability practices at IUBAT towards a more sustainable future.
